Rajaportti Sauna

The sauna block at Rajaportti in Pispala was built by Hermanni Lahtinen and his wife Maria in the beginning of the 20th century. The main building with a bakery and a shop was erected first, then followed by a smaller cottage, the sauna and a so called “taylor’s house”.

Today, the Rajaportti block belongs to the city of Tampere. Since 1989 the Pispala sauna association has been responsible for activities at Rajaportti and for maintenance of the premises. Thanks to the energy of the association, the sauna at Rajaportti is the oldest public sauna in Finland still going strong! At the turn of the millenium, a Sauna café was included and premises for a masseur was provided.

The Pispala sauna association wellcomes all sauna loving people to take a bath with us and enjoy their stay at Rajaportti. Furthermore, we hope that new generations yet to come will find their way to the public saunas and this way keep the genuine sauna culture forever alive!

The sauna culture in Finland has been inscribed on UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage 17.12.2020

The sauna culture from Finland was inscribed on the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) list (https://ich.unesco.org/en/lists) at the December 17, 2020 meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. As authorized by the state, the Finnish Heritage Agency commits, together with Finnish sauna communities and promoters of the sauna culture, to safeguard the vitality of the sauna tradition and to highlight its importance as part of customs and wellbeing.

Heating a sauna, the customs and traditions related to sauna bathing, as well as sauna in songs, beliefs, and folklore for example are part of this living intangible cultural heritage. The vitality of the sauna now hits an all-time peak: almost 90 percent of all Finns go to a sauna once a week. This popularity is also reflected in the number of saunas: there are 3.2 million of them in Finland. The tradition is passed on in families and in numerous active sauna societies.

Tampere - The Sauna Capital of the World

Tampere is now made known as the Sauna Capital. The Finnish Sauna Society and the International Sauna Association have stated to be in favour of Tampere’s status as the Sauna Capital. The Sauna Capital status is based on saunas being of high level and Tampere being home to most saunas in Finland. The announcement was made Monday 21.5.2018 at Finland’s oldest, still functioning, public sauna: Rajaportti Sauna in the district of Pispala, in Tampere.
